A California Highway Patrol officer died in an automobile accident Sunday after his patrol car tumbled off the road and crashed.

The single-vehicle accident occurred at about 9 a.m. on Interstate 8 at California mile-marker 84.40, according to CHP officials.

Officer Robert F. Dickey of the Winterhaven's CHP office was driving eastbound in the right lane when, CHP investigators believe, a tire blew out on the left side of his car.

Officer Wes Boerner, CHP spokesman for the El Centro office, said Dickey was on duty at the time. They do not know how fast he was traveling or if he was involved in a call, but Boerner said he may have been pursuing a speeder.

Witnesses report seeing Dickey's patrol car tumble and go through a roadside fence. The car rolled before coming to rest right-side up on the side of the highway.

"The car is almost unrecognizable," Boerner said. "Initial reports was they weren't sure if it was a Highway Patrol car or a Border Patrol car ... It was damaged from the multiple impacts of the rollover."

Dickey suffered severe injuries in the crash but was alive and conscious at the scene, Boerner said. He was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center by a Sun Care air ambulance.

He was pronounced dead at YRMC.

Eastbound traffic was diverted off I-8 to Ogilby Road Sunday while CHP investigated the accident scene. Boerner said they expected to have the eastbound I-8 lane near Ogilby reopened to traffic by 8 p.m. Sunday.

The U.S. Border Patrol initially responded to the scene, along with CHP and the California Department of Transportation.

Local workers with the American Red Cross also came out to provide water and other support services to the first-response personnel.

Dickey had been a CHP officer for five years, four of which he served in Winterhaven.

Boerner said they believe he was a resident of the Winterhaven community.

He added that though CHP tries to maintain its vehicles in the best mechanical shape, officers aren't immune to accidents.

"We're just people out driving around in cars. We're not invincible in any way to traffic collisions."

Original release date: June 12, 2007
Last revised: --
Source: US-CERT

Systems Affected

* Microsoft Windows
* Microsoft Internet Explorer
* Microsoft Visio
* Microsoft Windows Mail
* Microsoft Outlook Express
* Microsoft Secure Channel
* Win32 API

Overview

Microsoft has released updates that address critical vulnerabilities
in Microsoft Windows, Windows Secure Channel, Internet Explorer,
Win32 API, Windows Mail and Outlook Express. Exploitation of these
vulnerabilities could allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to
execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service on a vulnerable
system.

I. Description

Microsoft has released updates to address vulnerabilities that affect
Microsoft Windows, Windows Secure Channel, Internet Explorer, Win32
API, Visio, Outlook Express and Windows Mail as part of the Microsoft
Security Bulletin Summary for June 2007. The most severe
vulnerabilities could allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to
execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service on a vulnerable
system.

Further information about the vulnerabilities addressed by these
updates is available in the Vulnerability Notes Database

II. Impact

A remote, unauthenticated attacker could execute arbitrary code on a
vulnerable system. An attacker may also be able to cause a denial of
service.

III. Solution

Apply updates from Microsoft

Microsoft has provided updates for these vulnerabilities in the June
2007 Security Bulletins. The Security Bulletins describe any known
issues related to the updates. Administrators are encouraged to note
any known issues that are described in the Bulletins and test for any
potentially adverse effects.

System administrators may wish to consider using an automated patch
distribution system such as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

News: Firefighters Fully Contain Wildfire in Mono County

News: Firefighters Fully Contain Wildfire in Mono County:

"The Larson Fire is is now 100 percent contained and will be transferred to a Type 3 command organization at 6:00 am Monday morning, June 11th.
Resources will include essential overhead, three handcrews and 5 engines. Final acreage of the fire is reported at 1,080 acres.

The fire was sparked two Fridays ago and strong winds on Tuesday blew embers to new spots, igniting a new blaze along U.S. Highway 395 between Walker and Coleville, both in California. Firefighters credited more favorable conditions, lighter winds and some rain, in helping their efforts.

Calmer winds enabled air tankers and helicopters to attack the fire from the air. The wind had also pushed the fire in the opposite direction, causing it to burn into itself and preventing it from spreading.

A portion of U.S. 395 that had been closed was reopened Wednesday, and evacuated residents were allowed back into their homes. About 70 family members of the Marine Corps stationed north of Coleville were among those who returned home.

"Today was a piece of cake compared to yesterday. Yesterday, it was pretty scary. The smoke was real thick and black, and the wind was, what did they say, 75 to 80 miles an hour. I mean, it was coming fast," said Lenore Martin, resident."

Cal Fire Suspends Open Burning Permits Across State

firefighter battles flames
SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- Six Bay Area counties and five others across California are under new fire restrictions as a precaution due to unusually dry weather conditions.

In recent years Californians have been warned about potentially bad fire seasons that rarely materialize, but Cal Fire Spokesman Chris Morgan says this year is different.

"Southern California only had two and a half inches of rain and we're only 65 percent of normal," he said. "California is actually a Mediterranean type of climate, it's built to burn, but this year it has dried out much sooner."

State firefighters were called out five weeks ahead of the official start of fire season this year. Morgan said the suspension of burn permits will last until the start of the rainy season in November.
