30-Acre Brush Fire In Murrieta Quickly Contained Posted: 07 Oct 2007 09:34 AM CDT (CBS) MURRIETA, Calif. A brush fire that broke out Saturday just north of the Riverside-San Diego county line grew to 30 acres before it was contained, a county fire official said. The fire was reported at 3:57 p.m. at Bundy Canyon and Wright roads, said Cheri Patterson of the Riverside County Fire Department. About 150 firefighters, two helicopters and 14 engines battled the blaze, Patterson said. "The forward spread of the fire has been contained," Capt. Fernando Herrera of the Riverside County Fire Department said late this afternoon. "We have surrounded the fire. It's still at 30 acres, but we don't expect it to grow." No injuries were reported.
Update: 200 evacuated at Oceano Dunes Posted: 07 Oct 2007 09:31 AM CDT Update: 200 evacuated at Oceano DunesNo one reported injured By Leslie ParrillaA Manhattan Beach man was cited on suspicion of starting a fire in the Oceano Dunes Saturday that burned about 10 acres and led to the evacuation of dozens of campers. David Jaeger, 45, faces a possible fine of about $400 in addition to being billed for the cost of fighting the fire that started around 1 p.m. at the dunes, according to County/Cal Fire Investigator Andy Andersen. No one was injured during the blaze that was contained at about 4:10 p.m., according to fire officials. About 200 people were evacuated from the tent campground closest to the ranger station around 1:30 p.m., according to Tony Villareal, supervising ranger at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. "Jaeger was camping and lighting model rockets" on the beach, said Andersen. "The fourth one got caught in a tree and the fifth one in dune grass." Model rockets - plastic rockets that descend by parachute - are not legal at the dunes, said Villareal. Jaeger was interviewed and cited. An estimate for the cost of fighting the fire was not immediately available. About 65 firefighters battled the blaze that consumed dune grass and brush, according to County/Cal Fire Battalion Chief Bill Fisher. It burned east toward the campground where David Sanchez and his family were vacationing from Bakersfield. "They just told us to get out, leave all your equipment there and get out," said Sanchez as he waited for permission to return to his campsite. "Right there on our site the ashes were staring to come down." Many campers drove out of the campground to park on nearby Pier Avenue, said Villareal. But campers such as Don Dockum, of Orange County, who was in a neighboring campground, said he wasn't concerned about the fire. "Until you see the ashes, we're not too worried," said Dockum, who added that he had to evacuate recently during a fire at Big Bear Lake. Arroyo Grande, Oceano and Grover Beach fire departments also helped fight the fire, Andersen said.

Burn Restrictions Easing Up in eastern Nevada County Posted: 06 Oct 2007 12:10 PM CDT California Department of Forestry and Fire (CAL FIRE) Unit Chief, Brad Harris has declared that the suspension of all residential burning in the area of Cisco Grove east to the Nevada Stateline will be lifted effective October 9th, 2007 at 8:00 am. The cooler weather accompanied by wetting rains and snow have reduced the extreme fire hazard. All burning must be done with a valid burn permit and only on permissive burn days as determined by the local Air Pollution Control District. (APCD) Burn hours are "daylight hours only" to minimize smoke complaints due to nighttime inversions. Those needing a burn permit should go to their local fire station to obtain one. For specific times of burning, call (530) 582-1027. The following are burn permit requirements for burning debris. By following the requirements you then will have a better chance to avoid the consequences of an escaped debris pile. - No burning shall occur unless weather conditions, particularly wind, are such that burning can be considered safe. - Maximum pile size 4 foot by 4 foot diameter. - Clear all flammable material and vegetation within 10 feet of the outer edge of pile. - Keep a water supply close to the burning site. - An adult must be attendance with a shovel until the fire is dead out. Keep in mind, Fire season is not over yet! The remaining areas of Nevada-Yuba-Placer counties still need to receive a significant rainfall before we lift the burn ban in those areas. So please be extra cautious while burning. These early rain storms have given a false impression to the public about fire safety. CAL FIRE will maintain and staff an appropriate level of fire fighting resources until that significant rainfall. In the event the climate and fuels change and the potential for wildfires increase, CAL FIRE will reactivate additional fire fighting resources and firefighters to provide an appropriate level of protection based upon the threat potential. If you are in violation of the terms of your permit and your fire escapes, you could be held responsible for suppression costs and damages to another person's property as well as being issued a citation. |
