News - Man tries to create fire buffer, sets blaze instead

Posted: 28 Jun 2007 11:43 AM GMT-06:00

News - sacbee.com:
Man tries to create fire buffer, sets blaze instead -

"A man trying to create a fire buffer around his house actually set a 47-acre blaze Wednesday afternoon near Jackson Highway and Sloughouse Road, officials said.

The man was mowing his lawn at about 3:44 p.m. when sparks grew into a fire, said Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Capt. Jeff Lynch.

Lynch gives the man had the right idea, but did not execute it well.

'We do commend him for his efforts,' he said. 'But anyone who's going to create a defensible space needs to do it in the early morning when it's cool. And they need to have a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby.'

Lynch said 49 Metro firefighter and a group of Cal Fire fighters knocked down the blaze, with help of an F2 air tanker dropping retardant. The two-alarm fire caused no injuries and burned an outbuilding.

Lynch said fire officials urge people to create at least 100 feet of defensible space around their homes by ridding it of all dry vegetation."

News: GRASS FIRE ON SHORELINE CONTAINED

cbs5.com - Bay City News Wire:

MARTINEZ: UPDATE: GRASS FIRE ON SHORELINE CONTAINED

06/27/07 4:10 PDT

MARTINEZ (BCN)

Smoke wafted over Martinez today as a two-acre grass fire burned along the shoreline.

The fire was reported at 2:03 p.m. on the shoreline near the end of Berrellesa Street on East Bay Regional Parks District land, according to a parks district dispatcher.

Regional parks firefighters were joined by firefighters from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and Cal Fire.

No structures were threatened by the blaze and no injuries were reported, Contra Costa County Battalion Chief Steve Maiero said.

The fire, which was considered a wildland response, was contained to the open space area and reported under control at 2:59 p.m., Maiero said.

Crews in two helicopters, one from the regional parks district and one from Cal Fire, scooped water from the Delta and dropped it on the blaze.

Firefighters will be continuing to mop up the area, spraying water and foam on smoldering grass, shrubs and a few trees for several hours, Maiero said.

It was still unknown what caused the fire and Maiero said investigators would likely begin looking into it once the mop up was complete.

Officer Accused of Choking Skateboarder

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (June 27) - A police officer who appears to choke a skateboarder and put two others in a headlock in a video posted online has been put on administrative leave while police investigate, officials said.

Watch the Incident

Hot Springs Mayor Mike Bush said Tuesday that investigators have talked with witnesses who saw the officer, Joey Williams, stop the skateboarders on a downtown city sidewalk last Thursday. Skateboarding is banned in the area.

The video shows Williams apparently choking one of the skateboarders after forcing him to the ground, then later chasing and wrestling two others while holding them in a headlock.

"Unfortunately, the video shows it pretty good," Bush said.

Bush said he won't be sure of the city's next step until the investigation is complete. The video, taken by Matthew Jon McCormack and another unidentified skater, was posted Monday on YouTube, a popular Internet site.

What's Your Take?

Williams can be heard threatening one person with pepper spray if he moved, and several voices are heard asking why they were being arrested. One person can be seen running from Williams, and Williams later tells them they are fleeing and acting disorderly.

Williams did not answer a request through the department for an interview and did not respond to a phone message left at a home number in his name.

Police spokesman McCrary Means identified two of those arrested as McCormack, 21, and Skylar Nalls, 19, both of Hot Springs. McCormack faces a misdemeanor battery charge after allegedly pushing or striking a 67-year-old city employee during the altercation, Means said. Nalls was cited for skateboarding and faces misdemeanor charges of fleeing and obstructing governmental operations.

Four juveniles involved in the incident also face skateboarding citations and resisting arrest charges, Means said.

McCormack disputed many of the police allegations, especially his battery charge. He said he pulled on the city employee's arm after the man picked a girl off her feet in a choke-hold.

CA-SCU--San Rafael Hill - 30 acre fire burns on San Rafael Hill

30-acre fire burns on San Rafael Hill

A stubborn four-alarm brush fire on San Rafael Hill sent flames hundreds of feet into the air Wednesday night, forcing the evacuation of 50 homes and drawing firefighters from throughout Marin.

The fire, made difficult for ground crews because of the terrain and winds up to 20 mph, burned vigorously up the hill until air tankers from Cal Fire helped slow the blaze. The fire was reported about 7 p.m. and was still burning at 9 p.m. About 30 acres were burned.

The fire devoured the hill famous for disasterous conflagrations. Dozens of people throughout downtown stood in clusters, staring up in shock at the flames. Many chatted animatedly into cell phones, relaying what they saw to those on the other end of the line.

Smoke clogged the downtown streets and traffic slowed as motorists cranned their necks for a better view.

Darla Nagle, a 39-year-old journalism student, watched the scene unfold from Falkirk Cultural Center on Mission Avenue near E Street. She lives a block and a half away. "We were coming back from the East Bay and I was thinking, 'God, that looks close to the condo,'" she said.

Others, like Dave Borloz, a Corte Madera carpenter, were less unnerved as they watched firefighters battle the blaze above from a safe distance. "It doesn't scare me," he said. "I think if there were a fire approaching me, but, like an earthquake, I don't worry about it. If it happens, it happens."

Fire officials have fretted about a massive conflagration that could destroy downtown, and the rest of the city. The City Council on July 2 is poised to pass a comprehensive vegetation management ordinance, which will require homeowners in high-risk fire areas to take specific steps to create fire resistance around their homes.

Residents on Graceland Avenue were among those evacuated. An evacuation center was established at a recreation center on B Street.

The county put in operation the automated emergency notification system to inform residents by phone in the area affected by the fire.

A 35-member strike team from Cal Hire was dispatched to the scene.

San Rafael Police Chief Matthew Odetto said no structures had been damaged and there were no injuries.

There was no information about the cause of the blaze.
