| OCFA - Major structure Fire - Condominium fire Posted: 31 Dec 2008 10:02 PM CST Woman Injured In Laguna Woods Condominium FireAn 82-year-old woman who was trapped in her burning Laguna Woods condominium until she was pulled out by firefighters suffered critical smoke-inhalation injuries Wednesday, while her daughter managed to escape the home with moderate injuries.The Orange County Fire Authority was called to the single-story condo at 3455 Bahia Blanca West around 9:30 a.m., said OCFA Capt. Greg McKeown. The woman's 52-year-old daughter was outside the two-bedroom, 1,200- square-foot end unit, he said. Firefighters, using thermal-imaging equipment, found the 82-year-old woman inside the home and got her out just before the fire flashed in the condo, chasing all firefighters out of the structure, McKeown said. The women were taken to Saddleback Memorial Medical Center, he said. The fire was controlled shortly before 10 a.m. One firefighter suffered a wrist burn and also went to the hospital, McKeown said. The unit was gutted, and the one next to it had smoke damage and a hole in the roof created by firefighters checking to see that no fire was in the attic, McKeown said. | LAPD: Suspicious package gets robotic exam Posted: 31 Dec 2008 09:58 PM CST Box forces evacuation at LAPD Harbor Division The Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Division was evacuated for nearly three hours Tuesday while the bomb squad investigated a suspicious package. Officer Ana Aguirre said the call came in just after noon about a box left in the lobby of the station at 221 N. Bayview Ave., Wilmington. The station was evacuated "as a precaution," Aguirre said, while an X-ray machine on a robot was sent in. | MCI KERN COUNTY - MVA 27 INJURED Posted: 31 Dec 2008 10:11 PM CST Visibility at the time of accident was estimated at 400' due to fog as truck leaves a mile of destruction. KERN COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A runaway truck struck a number of vehicles on the I-5 near the Lebec exit, Wednesday afternoon. The Kern County Sheriff's Department is on the scene. Authorities are now reporting there have been no fatalities. Approximately 27 people have been injured, according to L.A. County Fire. According to CHP, the truck may have suffered from brake failure. The vehicles were spread over approximately 1 mile stretch of northbound Interstate 5 between Fort Tejon and Grapevine. The location is near the Lebec exit. There have been reports the truck hit about seven vehicles, including a passenger van that overturned. The van may have had as many as 15 people on board. Several air ambulances are on the scene. The northbound 5 Freeway was shut down due to the accident. However, as of 3:30 p.m., the northbound I-5 was reopened. | Cal Fire/San Luis Obispo County - Strucure fire Posted: 31 Dec 2008 12:23 PM CST Fire destroys home, buildingAn electrical problem caused a fire that destroyed a residential and commercial building at 406 Aloma Way on the Nipomo Mesa early Monday morning, said a spokeswoman for Cal Fire/San Luis Obispo County Fire Department. The fire did an estimated $800,000 damage to the 5,000-square-foot building, half of which was a home and half of which was a commercial unit occupied by the Brad Anderson Construction Co. An unidentified civilian suffered first-degree burns over 8 percent of his body and second-degree burns over 1 percent of his body as he was attempting to move items out of the garage, the spokeswoman said. | Concord apartment fire fatal for Elderly woman Posted: 31 Dec 2008 12:07 PM CST  Elderly woman dies after Concord fire An elderly woman was killed after she suffered severe burns, and more than a dozen people were displaced in a fire that broke out at an apartment complex Monday afternoon, according to the Contra Costa Fire District. The second-floor apartment where the fire started was destroyed. Firefighters were able to mostly keep the blaze from affecting other units, though some nearby apartments in the three-story complex sustained smoke damage. The two-alarm blaze was reported about 12:50 p.m. at the Lake Terrace apartments in the 1700 block of Ellis Street, off Clayton Road. A contingent of at least 30 firefighters had the fire under control by about 1:20 p.m., but not before it displaced 12 adults and two children, according to American Red Cross spokesman Jim Mallory.Three people were inside the apartment where the fire originated, fire district spokeswoman Emily Hopkins said. Two of them, a man and a woman, were able to climb down a fire ladder to safety and were unhurt. The third occupant, the elderly woman, had to be carried out by fire personnel and was taken by helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center with severe burns. Her name was not released Monday. As firefighters worked, several residents sat on a grassy patch in front of the building, which was closed off by police tape. Neighbor Michael Palmer, a three-year resident of the complex, said that as the woman was carried out of the apartment, he could see she had been burned. He said he was sleeping when he heard screaming, and saw smoke coming from the nearby apartment. Gaea Haas, a five-year Lake Terrace resident, said she was in her living room when she saw smoke billowing in. "I went onto the balcony, and all I could see was black smoke," Haas said. "I woke my husband and called 911. Then I started knocking on doors." Sherry Louie, also a five-year resident of the complex, lives in a unit above the burned apartment and initially thought someone was barbecuing. She said she tried to knock on the door of the burning unit but got no response. Anxious residents Monday were still waiting to learn the condition of their apartments as fire investigators worked to determine what caused the blaze. | This years Clueless award goes to the CoCo sheriffs department Posted: 31 Dec 2008 12:13 PM CST  Just in time, last minute entry wins the 2008 "Get a Clue" award Contra Costa Sheriff's department is awarded the First annual California Fire News "Get a clue" trophy.  CoCo Sheriff assist with firefighting effortsApparently using a 2.5 pound fire extinguisher on this ripping, working apartment fire yesterday in Concord, A Contra Costa Sheriff's officer is credited with the departments "Futility" award in conjunction with the First annual California Fire News "Get a clue" trophy. The fire fighters did recover from the inhalation of the dry chemical powder incurred while trying to control induced laughing spasm's... Possibly due to budget cuts apparently they did not hold hand extinguisher training this year?.... I would love to know what the other LE officer is thinking? I hope he is not a training officer, And why are they even there? Are they really needed for anything at such an incident? Evacuations would seem to be an idea? traffic control, crowd control anything else but they appear to be just official spectators and in fact by looking at video and pictures might of hampered response by just getting in the way... |
