| - CHP - Woodside TC - Big Rig explosion and fatality Posted: 22 May 2007 04:48 PM CDT Highway 101 in Redwood City reopened after crash (05-22) 17:45 PDT REDWOOD CITY -- All lanes of Highway 101 in Redwood City have reopened following a big rig crash into the center divide, officials said. According to the California Highway Patrol, the cab of the big rig caught fire after the crash, which occurred around 1 p.m. There were "major" injuries sustained in the crash, the CHP said. Editor- I watched this one evolve at the CHP CAD page...Very sad fatal injury accident in Woodside on 101 involving a big rig semi truck and other vehicles reads very bad for driver of the semi-truck.and possibly other critically injured victims. Update: INCIWEB INCIDENT UPDATED: 2007-05-22 20:31:36 ET Incident: Bolli REDDING, Calif. (May 22, 2007) – The Shasta-Trinity National Forest is currently suppressing a 40-acre forest fire, seven miles northeast of McCloud Bridge Campground near White Rock Mountain. "Lake users and residents along Shasta Lake may see or smell smoke, but should not be alarmed at this time," said Forest Service Spokesperson Mike Odle. The smoke from the Bolli Fire may be visible from Interstate 5 and along Shasta Lake. Public seeing smoke northeast of McCloud Bridge Campground do not need to call 911 or local law enforcement. There are approximately 60 Forest Service personnel on the Bolli Fire, including 18 smokejumpers, three engines, two hand crews, an air attack helicopter and a water tender. The Bolli Fire marks fire number 31 on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest since January 18. Forest officials are startled at the large portion of the 31 fires, which are suspected to be human caused. Officials are asking the public to take precautions this Memorial Day weekend. "Light rain this year, coupled with drier than normal fuels, is a concern for us," said Odle. | FISCAL CONTROLS IN 2006 FIRE SEASON Posted: 22 May 2007 07:24 PM CDT News Blog -: "FISCAL CONTROLS IN 2006 FIRE SEASON USDA Forest Service News Release No. 0148.07: INDEPENDENT STUDY FINDS FOREST SERVICE EXERCISED APPROPRIATE AND ADEQUATE FISCAL CONTROLS IN 2006 FIRE SEASON WASHINGTON, May 21, 2007 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture today announced that an independent Brookings Institution panel found the USDA Forest Service exercised appropriate and adequate fiscal diligence in suppressing wildfires during the record breaking 2006 fire season. The panel reviewed 19 large fires that burned more than 1.1 million acres and cost $470 million dollars to suppress. The review panel also identified several 'issue areas' to help the Forest Service contain the rising costs of firefighting. Agriculture Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Mark Rey said the recommendations of the panel will be acted upon immediately. 'The cost of firefighting is rapidly approaching half of the Forest Service entire budget for caring for the nation's 193 million acres of national forests,' Rey said. 'We are doing everything we can to curb the costs of firefighting while taking every step to protect the safety of our firefighters and ensure they have appropriate tools to do their job. | Posted: 22 May 2007 07:08 PM CDT KOLO - California News: Collapsed Part of Bay Bridge Will Reopen for Holiday Weekend Oakland, CA Repairs to a section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge that collapsed in a tanker truck fire last month will be completed by Thursday night, reopening the busy freeway for Memorial Day weekend, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Monday. By finishing the work more than a month before the June 27 deadline set by the California Department of Transportation, Rancho Cordova-based contractor C.C. Myers Inc. will receive a $5 million bonus for the work. "Thanks to hard, around-the-clock work of Caltrans and C.C. Myers, our local partners and businesses, Bay Area motorists can once again travel through this busy interchange," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "Just in time for the holiday weekend, this roadway will be open in 26 days from when the accident occurred." The contractor originally predicted the portion of the MacArthur Maze, which connects eastbound Interstate-80 to eastbound I-580, would be completed by June 2. Myers announced the earlier finish late last week and Schwarzenegger confirmed the opening Monday. The early reopening is good news for commuters on one of the nation's busiest freeway interchanges, hobbled by the April 29 fire caused by an overturned gasoline tanker. C.C. Myers bid $867,075 for the contract. Caltrans offered a bonus of $200,000 for each day the work is finished ahead of the deadline, with a maximum of $5 million. | Esperanza Fire - The Esperanza Final Report Posted: 22 May 2007 06:06 PM CDT See whole report and all attachments at: Cal fire  The Esperanza Final Report: Executive Summary The Esperanza Fire was reported on October 26, 2006 at 1:11 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) in Cabazon, California, within the jurisdiction of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). At approximately 7:15 a.m., five wildland firefighters from Forest Service Fire Engine 57 were overrun by the fire, while they were positioned near an isolated, vacant residential structure. All five firefighters were fatally burned by a sudden, intense fire run up a steep drainage below their location. The fatalities occurred in the rural mountain community of Twin Pines, which is located in the San Jacinto Mountains approximately four miles southwest of Cabazon. Twin Pines is an identified wildland urban intermix with a recognized "extreme threat" rating for potential destructive impacts from wildfires. Engine 57 and four other Forest Service fire engines from the San Bernardino National Forest, San Jacinto Ranger District were dispatched to the Esperanza Fire based on an Interagency Cooperative Fire Protection Agreement. All five Forest Service Type III fire engines and a March Air Force Base fire engine were performing structure protection in close proximity to each other when the fatalities occurred. | Riverside Firefighter Charged With Manslaughter Posted: 22 May 2007 05:48 PM CDT Riverside Firefighter Charged With Manslaughter(AP) HEMET, Calif. A Riverside County firefighter was charged with vehicular manslaughter for some safety slip-ups that led to the death of a fellow firefighter in a 2005 engine accident. Michael Lawrence Arizaga was driving the fire engine at about 45 miles per hour through a rainstorm when it spun off a freeway and rolled down a 44-foot embankment, investigators said. CHP officers said 23-year-old Christopher Kanton wasn't wearing a seat belt and was flung from the vehicle. Arizaga was at fault because he failed to switch off a special engine brake that must be deactivated in rain or snow, investigators said. They also said he should have been traveling about 15 miles per hour slower and that it had been his responsibility to make sure Kanton was wearing a seat belt. | Posted: 22 May 2007 03:46 PM CDT Lake Berryessa fire contained - KFTY TV50: "A 450-acre fire near Lake Berryessa in Napa County has been completely contained, according to a dispatcher with Cal Fire. The fire, which started at 9:30 p.m. Friday, was 85 percent contained by 8 a.m. Monday morning, according to Cal Fire spokeswoman Alicia Amaro, and was fully contained Monday evening. According to the dispatcher, the cause of the blaze, referred to as the Braye Fire, is still under investigation. Two Cal Fire engines and a fire crew were sent to the scene to continue monitoring for hot spots, according to the dispatcher. All roads in the area of state Highway 128 are open and no homes were evacuated, Amaro said. About 150 firefighters from Cal Fire's Sonoma, Lake and Napa unit were assisted by firefighters from Cal Fire's Santa Clara unit. | Connecticut Firefighter Dies From Injuries in Collision - In The Line Of Duty Posted: 22 May 2007 01:27 PM CDT  Connecticut Firefighter Dies From Injuries in Collision - Line Of Duty death: "A firefighter who was critically injured when two fire trucks collided while racing to a house fire died Tuesday morning, officials with the mayor's office said. Capt. John Keane was married and had two children, ages 8 and 10. 'He was the kind of guy you would always want standing by your side. If you faced a tough issue, he was always there with the information you needed to make a good decision,' Fire Chief Michael Maglione said. A second firefighter injured in the crash, Joseph Fischetti, remained in critical condition at Waterbury Hospital. The two were thrown from an engine truck when it collided with a ladder truck Saturday morning. Keane suffered head and internal injuries, and Fischetti, who was driving, sustained internal injuries, fire officials said. Six other firefighters were injured and are expected to recover, authorities said. Fire Chief Michael Maglione said an investigation will include a review of the trucks' repair records.
