City of Santa Clara - Four-alarm fire - ECS Refining Posted: 02 Oct 2007 01:05 AM CDT Firefighters from the City of Santa Clara aided by firefighters from the City of San Jose battled a four-alarm fire that broke out next to ECS Refining, a recycling business located on Reed Street in a light industrial section of Santa Clara. The blaze, which started around 12:30 p.m., burned for over three hours, and consumed a large debris pile, comprised of plastic palettes, discarded computers, and other materials destined for recycling. Firefighters under the direction of Santa Clara Battalion Chief Randy Titus attacked the fire with multiple hand lines and were successful in preventing the spread of flames to adjacent exposures. Two firefighters and two civilians were transported to area hospitals for treatment related to the fire. Photo by: Charles White - Modified by CalFire News The firefighters were helping to mop up the Butler 2 Fire, Forestry bus went over the side of Highway 18 along the Arctic Circle The forestry hand crew bus crashed through a guard rail and went over the side of at mid-morning on Monday, tumbling at least 400 feet down possibly as far as 1,200 feet. CHP Scanner traffic reported that the location of the accident is two miles west of the Big Bear Dam. The vehicle is "approximately 100 feet below the fire ridge" and was in two pieces. The cab and the chassis were separated from the crew box. Injuries: Six people suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Bear Valley Community Hospital. Two people suffered moderate injuries, according to authorites. One crewmember was extricated from the vehicle, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department. Resources: Two Helicopters and four ground ambulances, were sent to the scene, and a third Life Flight Helicopter was requested. Updates: The US Forest Service dispatch log indicates that the crew may have been from Heaps Peak Helibase located between Sky forest and Running Springs. According to the US Forest Service Press Release, all eight individuals are alert and responding. The Forest Service has withheld the names of the victims and which helicopter support crew was involved. The vehicle was a "chase buggy" that was carrying crew members supporting a helicopter working the Butler Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest, said Andrea Lannen, a dispatcher for the U.S. Forest Service. Some of the crew members had broken bones, including one person who had a possible broken pelvis, she said. That person was being transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, while others were being taken to Bear Valley Community Hospital. "So far there's a lot of broken bones," she said. Highway 18 was closed in both directions between Running Springs and Big Bear Lake so emergency crews could land helicopters on the road. Wild CAD:

Kennedy Meadows lodge - Structure Fire Posted: 01 Oct 2007 09:02 PM CDT Total destruction of Kennedy Meadows lodge and outbuildings reported According to Cal Fire officials an early morning fire destroyed the Kennedy Meadows lodge and Seven cabins on Monday. The fire was first reported just after 2 a.m. Location: The Kennedy Meadows Lodge is located about 40 miles east of Sonora, along Highway 108 near Strawberry. Resources: Two battalion chiefs, seven engines and three water tenders Updates: (3) CAL FIRE Investigator Rommie Jones reports the Kennedy Meadows fire of early this morning was ignited by a flue fire in the attic of the main lodge. (2) Kennedy Meadows, CA -- Fire has completely destroyed the majority of the facilities at Kennedy Meadows. County Fire Inspector Craig Hart reports the total destruction includes the main lodge, seven cabins, the residence cabin, one laundry house, one generator shed with three eight kilowatt generators, one public restroom, one shower house, a water heater house, a tool shed, a storage shed, one car and one truck. Two travel trailers were damaged. Undamaged structures include the Manager's house, several employee housing units and the bar. The initial report has the ignition point of the fire in the kitchen or fireplace of the main lodge. One individual suffered a minor burn. (1) - Fire officials say flames have destroyed the Kennedy Meadows Lodge and at least 7 other cabins in in Tuolumne County. |
