LACSD Thugs sentenced for assault on LACFD firefighter Posted: 26 Apr 2009 06:54 PM PDT 2 LA County deputies admit assaulting firefighter The Associated Press Posted: 04/23/2009 07:35:28 PM PDT Updated: 04/23/2009 07:35:28 PM PDT NORWALK, Calif.—Two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies have been sentenced to three years of probation and community service for beating a firefighter while they were off-duty. Joshua Titel pleaded guilty Thursday to misdemeanor assault, while Brian Richards pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery for beating and kicking firefighter Stephen Paige in June 2007 in San Dimas. Both men were ordered to pay restitution to Paige. Titel was also ordered to complete an anger management program, attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and not possess a gun during probation. The sheriff's office says the deputies have been suspended without pay until an internal review is completed. It was not immediately clear what prompted the beating. Source: mercurynews.com - Link

Cal Fire: It's time to clear vegetation around home Posted: 26 Apr 2009 11:03 AM PDT The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, more popularly known as Cal Fire, is urging residents to create a 100-foot zone of defensible space around their homes before temperatures and the fire risk heat up. Here are some Cal Fire tips that can help homes survive wildfires: Remove all flammable vegetation within 30 feet of all structures. In an additional 70 feet, space trees and plants away from one another. Clear all needles and leaves from roofs, eaves and rain gutters. Trim branches 6 feet from the ground. Use trimming, mowing and power equipment before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m., not during the heat of the day and not on extremely dry and windy days. Landscape with fire-resistant plants. Fire Service Looking for a Few Good Women Recruits Posted: 26 Apr 2009 11:00 AM PDT SACRAMENTO, CA - The California Fire Service is looking for a few good women. That was the theme at a recruiting event at a fire service testing facility Saturday morning in Natomas. The recruitment outreach effort has been spearheaded by the California Fire Fighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee and the Commission to Recruit Women for the Fire Service. Davis City Fire Captain Emily Lo, who is also a spokesperson for the Commission to Recruit Women for the Fire Service, said that only five percent of California's fire fighters are women. That was a number she hoped would change through recruiting events like the one on Saturday. "We've seen doctors, lawyers and other male dominated professions change the culture and the way of thinking," Lo said. "We're hoping to do the same for the fire service." Rebekah Jacobson was one of the recruits who came out to try out the course at the Candidate Physical Ability Testing Center. Jacobson is a single mother with two young children to support. Jacobson said a career in the fire service could change her life. "I'd be able to buy a house, and support the kids," Jacobson said. "It's really hard, especially in this economy. You can't just work at a restaurant." Lo estimated about 500 men and women turned out to the event. At least 10 California fire agencies were there recruiting, including CAL FIRE, Sac Metro Fire Department, and Sacramento City Fire Department.
