Headlines:

  • Paradise Road is open from Highway 154 to the First Crossing Day Use Area.
  • Highway 33 from Ventucopa to Ozena remains closed, except to residents. Fire officials hope to reopen Highway 33 to thru traffic by 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, contingent upon fire behavior and fire fighting success.

Current Situation:

Today's weather hindered firefighters' plans to burn near Brubaker Canyon and west of Cuyama River Wash along Highway 33 north of Rancho Nuevo Canyon. Firing operations began late this afternoon when favorable winds allowed for safe and effective fireline development. Although the fire made a run within the sage flats and river wash, it was suppressed and no fire crossed Highway 33. Major progress was made in controlling the western perimeter of the fire on both sides of the Sisquoc River. Crews closely monitored, patrolled, and extinguished hot spots along the north central perimeter of the fire.

There was significant progress in rehabilitation efforts in the Live Oak Zone of the Zaca Fire. The Live Oak Zone has reached full containment and efforts continue to be focused on furthering rehabilitation and restoration of those areas affected by the fire and suppression activities.

Road closures and evacuations associated with fire suppression activities have been lifted, however, all areas and roads included within the Los Padres National Forest Closure Area remain closed to public entry.

State Highways, Forest Roads and Area Closures:

  • Hwy 33 between Wheeler Gorge and Ventucopa will be closed to all traffic until Sunday, August 26, except for residents.
  • Happy Canyon Road is closed at the Los Padres National Forest boundary.
  • Figueroa Mountain Road is closed at the Los Padres National Forest boundary.
  • East Camino Cielo Road is now open between Hwy 154 and Gibraltar Road. East Camino Cielo is still closed east of Gibraltar Road because it is within the Forest closure.
  • Paradise Road is open from Highway 154 to First Crossing Day Use Area.
  • The Zaca Fire Area Closure in Los Padres National Forest remains in effect. The closure includes lands in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Kern Counties. The expanded closure encompasses approximately 888,000 acres including the entire San Rafael, Matilija, and Chumash Wildernesses, a portion of the Sespe Wilderness, and adjacent national forest lands. Detailed information on the closure can be found at www.fs.fed.us/r5/lospadres or www.inciweb.org or at a Los Padres National Forest office.

Evacuations:

  • A PRECAUTIONARY EVACUATION is in effect for residents along the west side of Highway 33 from the Ventura/Santa Barbara County line to Pine Mountain Summit.
  • The EVACUATION WARNING for Paradise Road, Los Prietos Boys Camp, and the Rancho Oso Guest Ranch has been lifted.
  • The EVACUATION WARNING for East Camino Cielo Road from Gibraltar Road east to Ventura County Line including Gibraltar Reservoir and Jameson Lake has been lifted.
  • Recreation facilities along Paradise Road between Highway 154 and First Crossing, including Forest Service campgrounds and Rancho Oso Campground, are now open. The Santa Ynez River Road, beyond the First Crossing and all associated recreation facilities are closed.

Ojai safe from Zaca Wildland Fire, Zaca officials say

Posted: 23 Aug 2007 04:17 PM CDT

(1):
Fire officials are confident the Zaca fire no longer poses a direct threat to Ojai.

The fire had reached within 17 miles of the town on Monday.

Firefighters kept the massive blaze from heading east and south through round-the-clock hard work, using bulldozers and hand crews to remove brush and other flammable material from the fire's path, said Capt. Barry Parker, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.

This morning, officials disbanded a command center set up at the VVentura County Fairgrounds. It was established earlier this week to coordinate efforts should the fire have gone toward Ojai.

Though much progress has been made along the fire's eastern and southern flanks, Ventura County residents should expect to see a lot of smoke over the coming weeks, Parker said.

The fire's northern flank is still a problem and is expected to generate huge plumes of smoke at least through the beginning of September, he said.

Officials hope to have the fire fully contained by Sept. 7. But they caution that could change should there be hotter weather and more winds in the days to come.

Trend Micro ServerProtect Contains Multiple Vulnerabilities

Original release date: August 23, 2007
Last revised: --
Source: US-CERT

Systems Affected

* Trend Micro ServerProtect for Windows/Novell Netware

Overview

A number of vulnerabilities exist in the Trend Micro ServerProtect
antivirus product. These vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker
to completely compromise an affected system.

I. Description

Multiple buffer overflow vulnerabilities and an integer overflow
vulnerability have been discovered in the RPC interfaces used by
various components in Trend Micro's ServerProtect software package.
These vulnerabilities could be exploited by a remote attacker with the
ability to supply a specially crafted RPC request to the system
running the affected software.

Further information about the vulnerabilities is available in the
Vulnerability Notes Database.

II. Impact

A remote, unauthenticated attacker could execute arbitrary code on a
vulnerable system. The attacker-supplied code would be executed with
system privileges, resulting in a complete compromise of the affected
system.

III. Solution

Apply updates from Trend Micro

Trend Micro has provided an update for these vulnerabilities in

ServerProtect 5.58 for Windows NT/2000/2003 Security Patch 4 -
Build 1185

Administrators are encouraged to review this notice and apply the
patch as soon as possible.

Restrict network access to the affected components

Until the patch can be applied, administrators may wish to block
access to the vulnerable software from outside their network
perimeters, specifically by blocking access to the ports used by the
ServerProtect service (5186/tcp) and the ServerProtect Agent service
(3628/tcp). This will limit exposure to attacks; however, attackers
within the network perimeter could still exploit the vulnerabilities.

Fire truck crashes on way to fire - Minor injuries

A Brooktrails fire engine rests on its side after a Saturday afternoon crash...
(The Willits News)

A Brooktrails fire engine rests on its side after a Saturday afternoon crash... (The Willits News)The Willits News - Fire truck crashes on way to fire:

A fire engine from the Brooktrails Fire Department crashed on its way to an afternoon vegetation fire on Sherwood on Saturday, August 18. Of the five volunteer firefighters on the pumper fire truck, two received minor injuries.

Battalion Chief Robert Nowlin, 40, received a broken finger and Firefighter Adam Stewart, 27, has bruised ribs and a minor leg injury.

The other firefighters, Neil Banham, 53, Josh Moralez, 18, and Jake Jones, 19, escaped injury.

While the fire engine was en route to the mixed grass and timber fire, its right-side wheels traveled off the main portion of the roadway, causing it to slide out of control on the dirt. Even though Nowlin attempted to regain control, he was unable to and the truck rolled onto its right side beside the roadway, says Officer Terry Munoz of the California Highway Patrol. Other members of the fire department following arrived promptly on scene and extricated the crew.

"I am so grateful that the crew was not seriously injured and that no one from the public was injured, either," says Brooktrails Fire Chief Daryl Schoeppner. "Firefighting is a risky job; these guys put themselves at risk for the public every time they respond. We never like to see these kids of things happen,

Zaca Wildfire, Southern California

Since July 4, 2007, the Zaca Fire has been burning through chaparral and woodlands in Southern California's Los Padres National Forest. These images of the fire were captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite on August 21, at which point the fire had burned over 220,000 acres. According to the daily report from the National Interagency Fire Center on August 22, the fire was about 80 percent contained.

The pair of images includes a photo-like version of the scene (top) and an infrared-enhanced version (bottom) that highlights burned areas (brick red) and possible open flames (bright pink). In both images, areas in which the sensor detected active fire are outlined in red. In the photo-like images, the dry vegetation of the chaparral landscapes of Southern California appear greenish brown, bare ground is light tan, and irrigated farmland is bright green.

The large images provided above have a spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides twice-daily images of the region in additional resolutions.
