Though the nozzle proved not to belong to our agency, it was our pleasure to return it to a truly appreciative crew at the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD). Mr. Markland adamantly declined the offer by LAFD Engine Company 41 to buy him cup of coffee on the spot. We hope however, that he'll soon make good on his open invitation to join Captain Mark Arnold and the 'B' Platoon crew at LAFD Station 41 for a freshly-brewed cup whenever he has the time. Not only are fire nozzles essential to our vocation, but Mr. Markland's thoughtfulness and sense of personal responsibility saved the crew at LACoFD Station 8 many hours of paperwork - and the taxpayers of Los Angeles County hundreds of dollars. City of Los Angeles residents who find misplaced Fire Department equipment or supplies are encouraged follow David's example and contact us via 3-1-1. |
| LODD - Two Pasadena Firefighters Killed In Plane Crash In Mexico Posted: 15 Jun 2007 02:42 PM GMT-06:00 Two Pasadena Firefighters Killed In Plane Crash In Mexico:  Two off-duty Pasadena firefighters were killed in a private plane crash in Mexico, department officials announced Friday. Kenneth Soltis, 47, from La Verne, and Agua Dulce resident John Kiesow, 49, who was piloting the aircraft, were killed Thursday afternoon, said Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian. The plane went down near a small town in Mexico, she said, but could not be more specific about the location or other details of the crash. She said the firefighters, who were the only people aboard the aircraft, died at the scene. Soltis, called "Barney" by his peers, worked at the Pasadena Fire Department for more than 20 years. He was known by fellow firefighters for his talented carpentry work, Derderian said. Soltis is survived by his wife, Shanna, and three daughters, ages 13, 18 and 20, Derderian said. Kiesow was a 26-year Fire Department veteran and an avid airplane enthusiast, according to Derderian. Kiesow's father, a flight instructor, taught him how to fly, she said, adding that he also enjoyed building and flying model airplanes.Kiesow is survived by his wife, Verlene, a son, Arthur, and two daughters, Charlene and Jennifer, Derderian said. |

Firefighters discovered the woman's remains near a migrant encampment as they worked to put out the fire early Wednesday morning, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection dispatcher Larry Craig. Pieces of an exploded propane tank were found near the body, said sheriff's Sgt. Conrad Grayson of the bomb and arson unit. Residents in the hilly, rural area 45 miles north of San Diego reported hearing an explosion before the fire broke out. "We were all woken up," said Marge Sullivan. "It was loud. It's usually pretty quiet out here." Sheriff's investigators said they do not yet know whether the woman was killed by the fire. Foul play has not been ruled out, according to Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Wells. The woman's identity has not been released. The fire burned less than an acre in an open area, fire officials said. |
| Illegal blaze started wildfire Posted: 15 Jun 2007 09:53 AM GMT-06:00 Illegal blaze started wildfire : Local : Redding Record Searchlight: Illegal blaze started wildfireWind sent flames across 340 acresRED BLUFF -- A wind-whipped grass fire had blackened 340 acres Thursday in steep terrain in the Durley Flat area, about eight miles south of Paynes Creek. Sparked by an illegal campfire, the Dye Fire began shortly before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, said David Harp, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman. By Thursday evening, the fire was 85 percent contained. More than 200 firefighters from Cal Fire, the Tehama County Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service battled the blaze Thursday. The fire was within the Tehama Wildlife Area, near the Upper Slab on Antelope Creek. It was burning grass and brush within the Antelope Creek drainage. The fire is in a remote location and no structures are threatened, Harp said. On Thursday, 10 engines, four bulldozers, eight fire crews, two water tenders, five air tankers, three helicopters and one air attack plane were used to fight the fire. Harp said strong winds pushed the fire into the Antelope Creek drainage, making it difficult for firefighters to control. Fire officials expect to have the fire contained by 8 p.m. tonight, he said. "They're making really good progress," he said Thursday afternoon. Winds died down later in the day. With temperatures blasting hotter than 100 degrees, two firefighters suffered minor heat-related injuries during the fire, Harp said. Fire investigators are asking for the public's help in finding the person responsible for starting the fire. A person fled from the area, possibly in a pickup, toward Hogsback Road or Plum Creek Road, Harp said. Harp asked anyone with information to call Cal Fire's Tehama County headquarters at 528-5199. "We would like to get this guy," Harp said. |
