News- Man arrested in 2003 county wildfire Posted: 07 Aug 2007 10:02 PM CDT DailyBulletin.com - Man arrested in 2003 county wildfire: Federal authorities today announced charges have been filed against a Riverside man for allegedly sparking a brush fire that merged with the 2003 Old Fire. By Melissa Pinion-Whitt Staff Writer The U.S. Attorney's Office said Jeremiah D. Hope, 25, took his friends to check out the Old Fire after he was evacuated from his mountain retreat. He took several friends off-roading into an area of dry ferns and grass. He was charged with causing forest lands to burn and putting his vehicle in a dangerous place, both misdemeanors. When he stopped his car, the dry brush ignited and started a second blaze, officials said. Authorities, who called it the Playground Fire, said that blaze eventually became a part of the Old Fire, which consumed about 91,000 acres of vegetation and about 1,000 homes. While no one burned to death in the fire, authorities attributed six deaths to it. Federal prosecutors also filed charges against nine other people for engaging in negligent and illegal activities that sparked wildfires. One of the suspects, Steven Emory Butcher, 48, has been indicted on eight charges related to the 2006 Day Fire, most of which was in the Los Padres National Forest.

Current Situation: Last night the fire was less active due to the marine layer and continued to make occasional runs above the marine layer. The north and east flanks of the fire remain difficult to contain due to heavy fire activity and poor access. The west and southwest wind will help with control efforts along the western and southern flanks. Direct hand line and burning operations will continue in this area. The fire line at the head of Peachtree Canyon continues to hold. Engine crews, hand crews, and dozers will continue improving contingency lines and preparing for structure protection. A Cal-Fire base camp has been established at the Earl Warren Show Grounds. It will be the base camp for the "Front Country Support Group" or personnel and equipment that are currently preplanning for the Santa Barbara front communities on the south coast. This group will support current fire fighting resources that would be providing structure protection if the fire should threaten the above areas. Current Forest and Road Closures: · Happy Canyon Road is closed at Los Padres National Forest boundary. · Figueroa Mountain Road is closed at the Los Padres National Forest boundary. · East Camino Cielo is closed between Painted Cave Road and Gibraltar Road due to fire equipment traffic. · Paradise Road is within the Evacuation Order Area and is currently closed. · Hwy 154 is closed to general traffic between Foothill Road and Hwy 246. Fire Behavior Active burning occurred in the North, South and East portions of the fire today. The fire spread today was primarily backing down slope will occasional uphill runs when topography and wind are in alignment. Significant Events An evacuation order remains in feffect for Peachtree. Paradise Road and Lower Santa Ynez River Road to Gibraltar Dam. Highway 154 remains closed between Foothill Road and Highway 246. The firing operation was continued on the South portion of the fire to help diredt the fire away from communities to the South of the fire. Outlook Planned Actions Direct line construction continues wherever conditions allow. Indirect and contingency line construction is to continue on the South and East. Preparation and firing operations will continue where they can be done safely. The Eastern end of the fire will be attacked using aerial resources due to poor access and teh potential for extreme fire behavior. Holding action and mop-up will continue wherever possible. Structure protection will continue in all of the communities threatened by the fire. Projected Movement Winds are expected to be more westerly today, pushing the fire north and east. Within the next 24 hours, west winds may begin transitioning to the northwest driving fire spread. Growth Potential Extreme. Terrain Difficulty Extreme. But during their discussion of the newest draft of the Nevada County Fire Plan, committee members and some residents said they feared the plan would have no value unless people implement the plan home by home and understand the imminent danger of blazes. Imposter Posing as Fremont Fire Dept Official Posted: 07 Aug 2007 07:40 PM CDT Imposter Posing as Fremont Fire Dept Official The Fremont Fire Department and Fremont Police Department have been alerted to an individual posing as a Fremont Fire Department representative. The individual, using the name Jim Carter, requests a donation from members of the business community. If the business owner fails to comply, the individual threatens the business owner with inspections and aggressive enforcement action by the Fremont Fire Department. The Fremont Fire Department wants to inform the citizens of Fremont and the business community to question anyone who presents themselves as an official representative of the Fremont Fire Department. Official Fremont Fire Department representatives will be in uniform and carry an official Fremont Fire Department identification card. To verify the authenticity of anyone claiming to be a Fremont Fire Department representative, people are encouraged to call the Fremont Fire Department's administrative office at 510-494-4200 during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Fremont Fire Department inspects businesses for compliance with the California Fire Code, California Health and Safety Code, and other regulatory requirements. Fees associated with inspection will be invoiced by the City of Fremont and payable to the City of Fremont. Anyone requesting funds payable to any other entity should be viewed with skepticism.
