CAL FIRE - Hayfork - Vegetation fire, 5-acres 100% Posted: 02 Apr 2009 08:18 AM PDT Citation issued after Hayfork fire burns 5 acres HAYFORK - Fire crews were able to contain a 5-acre fire that burned through vegetation on a steep slope along Highway 3 near Hayfork on Wednesday. The fire, which started about 2:30 p.m., originated from a debris burn that escaped, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said, adding that a citation was issued to the person responsible for it. Cal Fire sent six engines, three water tenders, three 20-person hand crews and a bulldozer to the fire. Volunteer fire crews from Hayfork, Weaverville and Douglas City also helped battle the flames. Two engines from the U.S. Forest Service were also at the blaze, which started near Carr Creek, said Kent Romney, spokesman for the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. He said the fire had started at a 1-acre spot fire nearby and the tough terrain added to the difficulty of containing it. "It's in a steep area with narrow roads," he said. CAL FIRE - Air Team deployment - North Dakota Posted: 02 Apr 2009 01:32 AM PDT Gov. Schwarzenegger Deploys Resources to Help North Dakota Flood Victims Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced today that he has ordered a CAL FIRE Air Team to deploy to North Dakota to support flood rescue and recovery operations. An eight-member California team of specialists, consisting of aerial firefighters who have expertise in aircraft command and control, will provide management and coordination for some of the specialized helicopters and other aircraft working to rescue those displaced by flood waters and move sandbags and equipment throughout the state. They will be departing from Sacramento to North Dakota tomorrow morning. "When it comes to disaster response, California has the best trained and most experienced first responders in the nation," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "We received help from several states during last summer's fire siege, and we are always willing to return the favor by sending firefighters to states like North Dakota." The Red River, which divides North Dakota and Minnesota and runs north to Canada, has been flowing at three to four times its normal strength. Forecasters believe the river will eventually begin rising again after more snow begins to melt. The request for help by North Dakota emergency officials was made on Monday afternoon through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), a congressionally ratified organization that provides form and structure to interstate mutual aid. Through EMAC, a disaster impacted state can request and receive assistance from other member states quickly and efficiently. In fact, during last summer's fire siege, North Dakota sent a UH-60 helicopter to California. Though CAL FIRE is best known for its wildfire fighting activities, the department has often been called on to respond to all types of disasters in California and in other states. LACFD: MCI Traffic accident - Two Dead, 12 injured - Semi-Truck into vehicles, building Posted: 02 Apr 2009 11:20 AM PDT Update: Victims of accident - 12-year-old girl and her father killed by the out of control big-rig have been identified as 58-year-old Angel Jorge Posca and his daughter, Angelina, of Palmdale. The double-decker tractor trailer car hauler lost control at Foothill Boulevard and Angeles Crest Highway La Canada Flintridge, CA shortly before 6 p.m. and plowed into a bookstore whose patrons had fled. Momentum carried the truck -- loaded with several vehicles -- into a nail parlor, pinning the owner. (Google map - Link) The intersection was the scene of a similar accident Sept. 5, when a truck from Idaho carrying 78,000 pounds of onions lost its brakes coming down the steep incline from the San Gabriel Mountains Update: Trucker arrested in deadly crash - Marcos Costa, 43, was taken into custody on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, said Lt. Greg Sisneros of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Sisneros did not know where Costa lives but said he was a licensed Florida truck driver. Update: Two Dead, 12 injured. . 2 killed as truck collides with cars, slams into bookstore A Palmdale man and his daughter, 12, are killed. The double-decker trailer hauling cars lost control at Foothill Boulevard and Angeles Crest Highway, slamming into a bookstore and salon. A car-hauling truck collided with several vehicles Wednesday night before slamming into a bookstore in La Cañada Flintridge, authorities said. Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said they have reports of two fatalities and several injuries. The accident occurred just before 6 p.m. near the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Angeles Crest Highway. Fire Department spokesman Art Marrujo said it was not immediately clear whether the victims were in the bookstore or in the cars involved in the accident. Fire officials pulled victims out of cars, and television news footage showed the truck embedded in the front of the Flintridge Bookstore and Coffee House. Updated, 6:36 p.m.: Officials said there are five injured people, including one who was in the bookstore. Lynn Tran, manager of a nearby gourmet wine and spirit store, said she and other employees were stocking shelves when they heard a loud bang. "We heard a noise that sounded like an earthquake," she said. "It shook a little bit." Updated, 6:52 p.m.: Brandi Sjostrom, a waitress at Hill St. Cafe, a few doors away from the crash, provided this description: "I heard the bus braking really hard and everyone ran out. The bus almost came up on our curb. This really small red car was completely crushed. It was pretty awful. I've never seen anything like that. I was pretty shaken up."
